The Madlanga Commission has questioned KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Lieutenant-Colonel Deenadayalan Govender about cash deposits totalling more than R3 million into his bank accounts between August 2022 and December 2023.
The commission has put it to Govender that the value of the cash deposits was significantly higher than his monthly take-home salary.
Govender, who returned to the Madlanga Commission yesterday, has also been questioned about his relationship with tow-truck businessman Clive Naicker and convicted drug dealer Timmy Marimuthu.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson has put it to Govender that the commission will seek corroboration from several witnesses and examine whether the movement of funds showed possible signs of money laundering.
“If we add up all of the cash that went into your accounts between August 2022 and December 2023, either directly as cash or through the Cassie Shamal-Nagan route, we get to R3,050,574. And how that number is calculated is if you look at the totals at the bottom of page 79, you see roughlyR2.7 million. But that was before you disclosed to us that there was the additional R337,962,” explains Chaskalson.
